Instructions for Authors

1. Submission of manuscripts.

a)

Papers must be in Spanish or English. Upon request, Cuadernos de Economía will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper (before submission and at the author’s expense)

b)
Articles can be submitted in paper or electronic format. The latter is preferred. If you submit your article in paper format, please send two copies to:

Editor
Cuadernos de Economía
Instituto de Economía
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Casilla 76, Correo 17
Santiago – Chile

If you send in your manuscript in electronic format, please attach the file to an email message to cuadecon@faceapuc.cl. In your e-mail, report the title, authors, authors' addresses, keywords, JEL codes, and an abstract. Attach the full text of your paper. For safety reasons, you should also send one hardcopy of your paper to the address detailed above, that should match exactly the electronic version; in cases of discrepancy, the latter will be used as the definitive version for the reviewing process. To ensure an optimal editorial process, authors are requested to submit electronic versions of their papers in Word, WordPerfect, PDF, PostScript, or Scientific Workplace.

c)
Submission of a paper will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. The Editor does not accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers submitted. Upon acceptance of an article, author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

2. Peer Review Policy.

The peer review process of Cuadernos de Economía is designed to ensure that high quality scientific material is published. Articles must be original and unpublished. This journal employs double blind review, where both the authors and the referees remain anonymous throughout the process. Referees are selected according to their expertise on the topic of each article. Referees evaluate the articles in terms of originality, methodology and relevance of their conclusions. A final decision to accept or reject the manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author along with any recommendations made by the referees. Referees advise the editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the article.

3. Manuscript Format.

a)

Manuscripts should be typewritten on one side of the paper only, double-spaced with wide margins. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Title and subtitles should be short. Titles must be indicated with Arabic numeral, (e.g., 1. or 2.), subtitles should be lettered follow by the number of the subsection (1.1. or 2.2).

b)
The first page of the manuscript should contain the following information: (i) the title; (ii) the name(s) and institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s); (iii) an abstract of not more than 100 words.  A footnote on the same sheet should give the name, address, and telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author, as well as an e-mail address.
c)
The first page of the manuscript should also contain at least one classification code according to the Classification System for Journal Articles as used by the Journal of Economic Literature; in addition, up to five key words should be supplied.
d)   Acknowledgments and information on grants received can be given after the References.
e)
Footnotes should be kept to a minimum and numbered consecutively throughout the text with superscript Arabic numerals.
f)
Important formulae (displayed) should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript as (1), (2), etc. on the right-hand side of the page. Where the derivation of formulae has been abbreviated, it is of great help to referees if the full derivation can be presented on a separate sheet (not to be published).
g)
Acronyms should be spelled out the first time they appear in the text. Words in a language other than of the paper (e.g. Latin, Greek) should be in Italics.
h)
Most formatting codes are removed or replaced when we process your article so there is no need for you to use excessive layout styling.
i)
Please do NOT use options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns or automatic paragraph numbering.
j)
When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, please use only one grid for each separate table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align columns instead of spaces.  The text must contain a reference to where each table or figure should be inserted.
k)
Tables should be numbered consecutively in the text in Arabic numerals and typed on separate sheets.  They must include a note with the source and a title.
l)   Do NOT import the Figures into the text file.
m)
The illustrations should not be inserted in the text, and should be marked on the back with figure number, title of paper, and author's name. All graphs and diagrams should be referred to as figures, and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and clearly identified in the text. Illustrations for papers submitted as electronic manuscripts should be in traditional form. Illustrations will be reproduced photographically from originals supplied by the author, they will not be redrawn by the publisher. Care should be taken that lettering and symbols are of a comparable size.
n)
The References should include only the most relevant papers. In the text, references to publications should appear as follows: "Claro (1992) reported that . . ." or "This problem has been studied previously (Montero et al., 1969). The author should make sure that there is a strict correspondence between the names and years in the text and those on the list. It should be double spaced and listed in alphabetical order by author's name. References should appear as follows:

4. Submission of Accepted Papers

a)

Submission of accepted papers: Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup of the electronic file for reference and safety.

b)
Any manuscript which does not conform to the above instructions will be returned for the necessary revision before publication.

5. Proofreading

a)

Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. Proofs should be corrected carefully; the responsibility for detecting errors lies with the author. Corrections should be restricted to instances in which the proof is at variance with the manuscript.

b)
Cuadernos de Economía will do everything it can to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are sent back to us in one communication.
c)
You must check these proofs for:

typesetting or conversion errors
the result of (copy)editing actions. For example: language, house style, linking of captions to figures, graphical conventions, scientific nomenclature, etc.
the use of illustrations: are they depicted at their actual size and roughly in place?
d)
In the proofreading phase only errors resulting from the production process can be corrected. Other alterations are not possible at this stage.
e)
Accurate proofreading and clear marking of corrections are essential for the production of a quality paper. Please note that careful proofreading is solely your responsibility. Please mark any necessary corrections in a distinct manner.
f)
Please return your corrections as soon as possible, preferably within 5 days of receipt, by e-mail or fax. When returning corrections by fax, please also include a list of the corrections on a separate sheet. Note that we may proceed with publication if no response is received.
